When Joyce Bawah Mogtari said Ghanaians should “choose Mahama over Bawumia” because he “walks his talk,” it made me pause. Let’s be real, John Mahama failed the integrity test long ago.
His time as President was marked by corruption scandals, unemployment struggles, and economic challenges like “dumsor.” While he promised progress, his leadership often fell short. As we approach the 2024 elections, we must remember these lessons and demand real results, not just empty promises.
Mahama’s tenure as President of Ghana left a mixed legacy, particularly when considering the socio-economic challenges that flourished under his administration.
The Unemployed Graduates Association: A Product of Failed Policies Shows John Mahama Failed The Integrity Test Long Ago
During Mahama’s presidency, the rise of the Unemployed Graduates Association of Ghana was not a mere coincidence. It was a direct reflection of an administration that failed to prioritize job creation for the youth.
While infrastructural projects, such as roads and hospitals, were touted as successes, they came at the expense of an economy burdened by debt and corruption scandals.
These projects often lacked transparency in procurement processes, leaving many Ghanaians questioning their value for money.
The high unemployment rate among graduates under Mahama highlighted a disconnect between education and job creation policies.
Many argued that his government’s focus on flashy, politically expedient projects ignored the pressing need for sustainable economic opportunities.
Walking the Talk or Empty Promises?
Joyce Bawah Mogtari’s assertion that Mahama “walks his talk” is debatable. While he often spoke eloquently about transparency and development, his tenure was marred by corruption allegations, such as the GYEEDA and SADA scandals.
These controversies eroded public trust in his administration and undermined his claim of principled leadership.
For instance, the Savannah Accelerated Development Authority (SADA) was envisioned to uplift the northern regions of Ghana.
However, it became a symbol of inefficiency and mismanagement, with millions of cedis wasted on projects that yielded little tangible benefit.
The Economic Struggles Under Mahama
During Mahama’s presidency, Ghana’s economy was hit by a power crisis (dumsor), rising inflation, and a depreciating cedi.
These challenges hampered businesses, increased living costs, and led to widespread dissatisfaction.
His government’s decision to seek an IMF bailout further highlighted the precarious state of the economy, raising questions about fiscal discipline and economic foresight.
A Leadership Choice for the Future
While Mahama’s experience as a former President offers a wealth of political knowledge, Ghanaians need to weigh this against his track record.
Leadership goes beyond rhetoric; it requires tangible, positive outcomes that improve the lives of citizens.
Choosing a leader should be based on demonstrated ability to deliver, not recycled promises or claims of walking the talk.
In contrast, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia has been instrumental in implementing digitalization policies that have modernized public services and increased efficiency.
Whether these achievements outweigh the challenges of the current administration is a debate worth having, but they certainly provide a forward-looking vision for the nation.
Ghanaians must critically evaluate the legacies of both Mahama and Bawumia, considering who has the track record and vision to address the pressing needs of today.
Mahama’s tenure offered lessons in governance, but it also revealed significant shortcomings.
As the 2024 elections approach, voters must demand more than rhetoric—they must demand results.
Together, we are building a better and prosperous Ghana!
May God bless our nation, and may we continue to work together towards a brighter, more prosperous future.
