The University of Cape Coast (UCC) men’s basketball team, known as the Wildcats, has secured a coveted spot in the International University Sports Federation (FISU) 3×3 University World Cup.
This qualification comes on the heels of their impressive performance at the Afro Varsity 3×3 Basketball University Championship, held in Kampala, Uganda.
As the reigning champions of the Federation of African University Sport (FASU) 3×3 Basketball Challenge, the Wildcats were strong contenders in the championship. They successfully reached the final, demonstrating exceptional skill and teamwork.
Despite their valiant efforts, they narrowly lost the final match 16-18 to the hosts, Ugandan Christian University (UCU), on July 28, 2024.
Coached by Dr. Eric Opoku Antwi, the Wildcats showcased their prowess by defeating several notable teams. They triumphed over The American University, East Africa University, Victoria University, University of Abuja, Makerere University, Kisii University, United States International University-Africa, and the University of Ibadan.
This remarkable journey through the tournament secured their qualification for the World Championship, which will be held in China in November 2024.
In a post-tournament interview, Coach Dr. Antwi praised his team’s determination and resilience. He acknowledged the challenges faced, including the loss of two key players from the previous year and the introduction of two new members who performed admirably.
Reflecting on the tournament, Dr. Antwi stated,
“We encountered tough competition and managed to emerge victorious in all but the final game. We will review our performance, learn from it, and strive to clinch the first-place trophy in our next attempt.”
The Wildcats’ participation in the FISU 3×3 University World Cup represents a significant achievement for the team and the University of Cape Coast. With their sights set on global competition, they aim to build on their recent successes and compete for the top honors on the world stage.
The team and their supporters eagerly anticipate the upcoming tournament in China, where they will represent their university and country with pride.
